Ideal for party or retro artists

Whether you’re looking for a fun camera for the family or want to try something a little different, there’s a wide choice of instant cameras out there. Here’s our pick of the best models you can buy right now.

Digital cameras have killed analogue photography off right? Well, that may the case in most areas, but analogue is fighting back with instant cameras.

Whether it’s nostalgia creeping back or the unique aesthetic they provide, instant cameras and their distinct prints are seeing a huge renaissance – even with the dominance of the smartphone, you can’t beat having a print in your hand.

So, whether you’re looking for a fun instant camera to bring out at parties, or wanting to get a bit more creative with your photography, then you’ll want one of these cracking instant cameras.

1. Fujifilm Instax Mini 70

Lens: 60mm | Focusing: Macro, Normal and Landscape | Flash: Built-in | Self-timer: Yes

Slightly more advanced than the Instax Mini 9, the Instax Mini 70 offers a few more features, but it is still a cost – effective way to photograph instantly. The only thing you need to be careful about is that you don’t obscure your flash vertically when you take shots. All the rest is taken care of–focusing, exposure and flashing are all completely automatic. The failure to manually control the flash can be somewhat annoying–you would need the more expensive Instax Mini 90 for that–but you get a selfie mode and even a small selfie mirror on the front. We liked the Instax Mini 70 as an easy partner accessory.

2. Leica Sofort

Lens: 60mm | Focusing: Macro, Normal and Landscape | Flash: Built-in | Self-timer: Yes

It’s chunky and solid and it’s good plastic, although it’s made of plastic. It comes in a choice of mint, orange and white, and regularly takes Fujifilm Instax Mini film packs, although Leica also supplies its own film packs, producing a warm white frame around each image. You make shots with a small direct viewfinder at the top left corner of the camera. It’s not very large, but it’s useful. For an instant camera, Sofort offers a lot of control, in addition to fully automatic operation, with macro, bulb, self-timer, party & people, sport & action, double exposure and selfie modes. You can also turn on and off the flash. The Sofort is expensive in comparison with the Fujifilm Instax Mini 70, although the film is the same size.

3. Fujifilm Instax Mini 9

Lens: 60mm | Focusing: Macro, Normal and Landscape | Flash: Built-in | Self-timer: Yes

If you’re looking for a cheap and easy-to – use instant camera, you won’t go wrong with Fujifilm’s Instax Mini 9. There may be no more sophisticated controls available to more precious models, but that is half its charm. With little input to produce decent instant credit card prints, anyone can use it. The small mirror on the front of the camera makes it easy to have an instant selfie at parties. It is not surprising that it is one of the best – selling cameras available now.

4. Polaroid OneStep 2

Lens: 106mm | Focusing: Macro, Normal and Landscape | Flash: Built-in | Self-timer: Yes

With the famous brand now owned by an instant film group that continued to produce Polaroid film once the brand collapsed, OneStep 2 is the first camera in this new era. The new camera is just as easy to use thanks to its retro design inspired by the original OneStep of the 1970s. The production of large, square instant prints (it uses Polaroid I-Type film) means that you will pay a lot more per print than your Instax competitors. If you pay for this luxury, you will love OneStep 2.

5. Fujifilm instax SQUARE SQ6

Lens: 65.75mm f/12.6 | Focusing: Macro, normal and landscape | Flash: Built-in (can be turned off) | Self-timer: Yes

Unlike the original SQUARE instax model, namely the SQUARE SQ10 analog / digital hybrid, the SQ6 has a different idea. Shaped like the Instagram logo and designed for the younger user who shares their creations on the platform, the camera runs on a pair of CR2 batteries and spits 6.2×6.2 cm prints with a selfie mirror integrated in the camera’s front that allows easier self-capture. Fujifilm even throws in orange, purple and green flash filters to allow an instant color injection into pictures, and since the body is nowhere near as cumbersome as some other options, it is as convenient to carry as it is fun to use.
