Mercedes latest flagship saloon has been caught on camera for the second time, during testing near the Arctic Circle
Prototypes of the new Mercedes S-Class saloon, which is set to launch in 2020, have been pictured undergoing development testing by Auto Express’s spy photographers in the Arctic Circle.
Despite Mercedes’ current S-Class saloon receiving a hefty facelift last year, these spy shots confirm that a full replacement is on the horizon and will bring a completely new look and advanced tech to the luxury segment. A new S-class coupe will also appear faced with fresh opposition in the shape of the BMW 8 Series.
Like all S-Class saloons we expect this new model to be packed with kit, including an array of driver convenience technology, as well as Mercedes’s latest range of electrified drivetrains and infotainment systems.
Technology-wise, the new S-Class is expected to build on the outgoing model’s autonomous driving functions, and feature the next level of automation that could allow the vehicle to drive in urban environments with minimal driver input.
Mercedes will of course introduce updated petrol, diesel and hybrid engines to the range while later down the line the German firm is lining up an all-electric equivalent to the S-Class that will sit within the new Mercedes-EQ electric sub-brand. A high-performance AMG model will inevitably feature, alongside new AMG 53 48v mild hybrid performance version.
